Description

A symmetrical pair of houses dating to around 1830. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a double-pitched slate roof. They are arranged with a double depth plan and have a symmetrical five-window front over three main floors plus an attic, and also a basement. Clasping pilasters define the quoins. There are blind windows on the party wall. A continuous cornice runs along the top, below a blocking course, with plate glass sash windows in the attic. A continuous first-floor cornice and a sill band are present, and the six/six pane sash windows have balconettes. The ground floor windows are also six/six pane, while the basement windows are three/six pane, all in plain openings. Single-storey, parapeted entrance ranges flank the main facade, featuring moulded architraves and cornices resting on consoles, above six-panel doors which are glazed at the top. The interiors were not inspected. The pair represent a conventional, but finely executed, late Georgian design in the style of John Pinch, and exemplify the popular semi-detached house form of the period.
