Description
Villa Julia is a detached house built in 1828, as noted in the title deeds. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double-pitched slate roof with moulded stacks at the gable ends. The house has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a basement. The front is symmetrical with three windows. It has a returned coped parapet, a slightly returned cornice, a cornice band, a wide first-floor sill band, and a plinth.
On the first floor, there are eight/eight pane sash windows with trellised balconettes and sunblind boxes, along with a blind window in the center. The ground floor features a plate glass sash window with vertical railed balconettes and sunblind boxes. A tall flight of steps leads up to a six-panel door, which is glazed at the top and is sheltered by a restored swept canopy supported by trellised structures.
The interior has not been inspected. Villa Julia is a notable example of a late Georgian house, reminiscent of the style of John Pinch, and is enhanced by good ironwork and a characteristic blind window with a sash bar. Weston Road, where the house is located, was known as the Via Julia on Cotterell's 1852 Plan of Bath, named after one of the main Roman roads that led from Aquae Sulis to South Wales.
