Description
Selborne House is a detached house located on Pickwick Road in Corsham, built around the 1850s. It is constructed from Bath stone ashlar and features a stone slate roof with stone end stacks. The building has a compact, symmetrical design with gabled ends, a lower wing aligned with the right gable, and a later 20th-century rear wing that has concrete 'slates'.
The house is two storeys high and has three windows, all of which are 16-pane sash windows with very slender glazing bars set into stooled stone sills. The central entrance features a six-panel door topped by a radial fanlight, set in deep reveals and sheltered by a square portico supported by slender, unfluted Doric columns and responds. This entrance is accessed by three stone steps and a landing, and is adorned with a plain architrave and a moulded cornice, topped with a shallow blocking course.
Plain end pilasters rise from a slight plinth and incorporate a mid plat-band. The gables are coped, and the ashlar stacks have skirts and capping. The right return features a small sash window, while the wing includes various sash windows. The interior has not been inspected. Overall, Selborne House is a distinguished example of symmetrical design in the Late Georgian architectural style.
