Description

16 and 18 Pickwick are two houses, originally three, built in the early to mid 18th century. The front is made of painted ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble stone, topped with stone-tiled roofs and designed in an 'L' shape.

The front range of No 18 is two stories with an attic, featuring a coped west gable, a west end stack, and a rear wall stack on the left. It has a hipped dormer with 6-9-6 panes. The main wall includes a plinth and a band, with three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, each in raised moulded surrounds. The ground floor has a 6-panel door with a hood on brackets, a small 6-pane window to the right, and a 12-pane sash to the left, all in unmoulded surrounds. To the left, there is a framed plank door leading to a through passage, also with a moulded flush surround and a hood on brackets. The rear wall has a blocked upper window similar to the first floor front and a large stone fireplace on the left side.

The three-storey rear wing has a one-window range of painted rubble stone for No 18 and a three-window range for No 16. No 18 features flush bead-moulded 3-light windows on each floor, with the ground floor window being larger and having a flat dripstone, while the first floor has a moulded dripstone. There is a framed plank door to the right with a hood on brackets and an oval light on the rear west wall.

No 16 has a north end stack, with a pair of small 12-pane sashes on the upper floor and a blocked window to the right. The first and ground floors have original 2-light and 3-light flush cyma-moulded windows, with the first floor blocked and replaced by a central 12-pane sash. The ground floor has a central 4-panel door with a hood on scrolled brackets. The drip course over the ground floor is cut back except above the right side window. The south end wall is rendered and ochre washed. The rear wall features a 2-light recessed ovolo-moulded window on the first and second floors, and there are stone fireplaces on the first and second floors at the north end.
