Description
Devonshire Lodge is a detached house built around 1825, likely designed by John Pinch. It features limestone ashlar construction and a hipped slate roof with moulded stacks on the sides. The building has a double-depth plan with a small single-storey wing to the right.
The house stands two storeys high, with an attic and lower ground floor, and has a symmetrical three-window front. It is adorned with a returned coped cornice, a parapet, a frieze, and a first-floor sill band. The six-over-six pane sash windows on the ground floor are set in painted semicircular arched recesses and have balconettes. The centre of the parapet rises at the middle, flanked by stone paterae and scrolls, above an open balustraded panel.
The entrance features an elaborate painted stone doorcase with late Georgian ornamentation, including a cornice with foliate scroll carving on the frieze, Composite capitals decorated with grape and vine leaf motifs on plain pilasters, and a semicircular arched recess above a five-panel door with a large ornamental circular panel in the centre. At the rear garden front, there is a full-height segmental bay with a high parapet and louvred shutters on the windows.
Devonshire Lodge is a notable example of a late Georgian villa, contributing to the development of Bathwick Hill. The date of construction is derived from a conveyance from the Earl of Pulteney's estate, and the design drawings for this house and others nearby were produced by the Darlington Estate Office, where Pinch served as surveyor.
