Description

Cumberland Villa is a detached villa, built around 1824 by John Pinch. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, featuring wide bracketed eaves and moulded stacks to the sides and rear. The plan is double depth, with two storeys and a basement, incorporating a central three-bay block, flanked by an entrance bay (one functional, one blind) on either side, and recessed side wings and a further set back wing to the right.

The symmetrical front elevation includes an eaves band, clasping pilasters, and cornices on consoles to the ground floor. It features six/six pane sash windows. The side wings have returned low coped parapets, continuous sill bands, ground floor cornices and cornices on consoles over doors with two circular panels in the centre. Further six/six pane sash windows are present to the right return, along with French windows to the front garden, which have decorative cast iron balconies.

The interior, recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1989, includes an oval stone staircase with iron balusters and a mahogany handrail, reeded architraves, original marble fireplaces with hourglass grates, and high-quality plasterwork. The basement was formerly converted to a separate unit.

Outside, a front wall is defined by railings and pediment capped piers. This villa is a fine example of late Georgian architecture, contributing to the upward development of Bathwick Hill, and its symmetrical design shows influences from the emerging semi-detached house style. The date of construction is derived from a conveyance from the Earl of Pulteney’s estate, with drawings originating from the Darlington Estate Office, where Pinch was surveyor.
