Description

Thurston House, dating to circa 1830, is a detached house with later 19th-century additions. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof, featuring two tripartite dormers and moulded stacks to the returns. The house has a double-depth plan and a one-window set-back entrance wing to the left, located in Linden Gardens.

The main garden front is symmetrical, with two storeys and an attic above a basement. It features a three-window arrangement, with semicircular arched blind windows on the party wall. The front has set-back panelled pilasters that form quoins, rising through a slightly returned cornice band, a cornice, and a coped parapet. A sill band runs along the building, and there are three/six-pane sash windows to the first floor and three/nine-pane sashes to the ground floor. The later entrance wing has a coped parapet, a cornice, a ground floor cornice, and various plate glass sash windows. A stepped forward doorcase on the left return has 20th-century double doors, a cornice on pilasters with fluted consoles, and plinths. To the right, a raised surround with a keystone marks a set-back entrance door. The rear of the house features a canted bay with plate glass sash windows on the first floor and six/six-pane sashes on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.

Despite alterations to the roadside elevation, the property exemplifies the crisp Classicism and precise masonry characteristic of high-quality late Georgian houses in Bath. It sustained bomb damage during World War II and was subsequently altered to create two separate dwellings.
