Description
Westfield House is a detached house dating from around 1828, situated on a site that slopes down from the front. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double-pitched slate roof with moulded stacks at the returns. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a basement. The symmetrical front has three windows and includes a slightly returned coped parapet, a cornice, a cornice band, a ground floor platband, and a plinth. The windows are late 19th-century plate glass sash windows, except for the central first-floor window, which is a margin-paned French window that opens onto a trellised balcony above a swept-roofed verandah. This verandah is supported by cast iron columns decorated with anthemion motifs. There are steps leading up to a central late 19th-century bolection-moulded four-panel door, which has a margin-paned two-pane overlight from around 1828. The raised site creates a ground floor terrace that is enclosed by fine cast iron railings at the front.
To the right of the street front, there is a late 19th-century six vertical panelled door that leads to a long arcade of ten wrought iron arches, which support a segmental curved roof leading to the basement entrance. Westfield House is a notable example of a late Georgian suburban house in the style of John Pinch, characterized by its extensive use of cast iron decoration. The interior has not been inspected.
