Description

Sunnyside is a detached house built around 1840, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed from machine-cut limestone ashlar and features a roof that is not visible, along with moulded stacks positioned to the right of the center. The house has a double depth plan and presents a suburban appearance reminiscent of a smaller baronial style.

The facade consists of two and three storeys and features six windows. A castellated parapet spans the front, rising over a central gable range. The three-storey section on the right has label moulds above two-light casement windows, with two on the second floor and one on each of the lower floors. The two-storey gabled range that steps forward has a brattished parapet raised at the front, with plate glass sash windows on each side, including ground floor windows that have trellised plant holders and a ground floor plat-band.

To the left, a set-back range features a label mould above a two-light three-pane casement window on the first floor, above a chamfered four-centred arch that leads to a door opening with a modern glazed door. The far left range, which is set back further, has a similar first-floor window, and a ground floor string course spans both left-hand ranges.

The interior has not been inspected, but the building has previously served as a nursing home and a secretarial school, which may have resulted in alterations. Sunnyside is notable for its picturesque combination of Gothic motifs, reflecting the design trends of the time just before the High Gothic Revival. The canted bay may have been added later.
