Description
TQ 2880 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOUTH AUDLEY 79/42 STREET, Wl 5.2.70 No. 1 G.V. II Large terraced house. c.1878-79 by F.P. Cockerell, completed by G. Aitchison, junior. Red brick with lavish cut and moulded brick ornament, slate roof. Lively Renaissance detailing in delicate shallow relief. 3 tall storeys and basement, with dormered mansard. 2 major bays and 3 secondary niche bays. Projecting archivolt arched pilastered brick porch with panelled and balustraded parapet all in brick. 2 storeyed bay window with basket handle arched sash lights in brick architraves, richly modelled friezes etc. Niche bays have windows on 1st floor with 2 lights to left and 3 lights to right and same arches, sculpted niches above. String courses and elaborated entablature with balustraded parapet broken by 2 brick dormers with shaped pediments. Prominent chimney stacks. Short south return with similar detail. Decorative ironwork railing to 1st floor balcony. Distinctive elaboration to ironwork of area railings. Interiors partly altered but with continuation of richly modelled Renaissance rinceaux-putti detailing to mouldings, cornices etc , elaborated ironwork to staircase balustrade etc.
