Description
No. 1 South Audley Street is a large terraced house built around 1878-79 by F.P. Cockerell and completed by G. Aitchison, junior. It features red brick construction with elaborate cut and moulded brick ornamentation and a slate roof. The design showcases lively Renaissance detailing in shallow relief. The building consists of three tall storeys and a basement, topped with a dormered mansard roof.
It has two major bays and three secondary niche bays. A prominent brick porch with an archivolt arch and pilasters leads to the entrance, featuring a panelled and balustraded parapet. The two-storey bay window has basket handle arched sash lights set within brick architraves, complemented by richly modelled friezes. The niche bays contain first-floor windows, with two lights on the left and three on the right, all featuring similar arches and sculpted niches above.
The building is adorned with string courses and an elaborated entablature, topped by a balustraded parapet that is interrupted by two brick dormers with shaped pediments. It also boasts prominent chimney stacks and a short south return that mirrors the main details. A decorative ironwork railing adorns the first-floor balcony, and the area railings feature distinctive elaboration.
Inside, while some alterations have been made, the interiors retain richly modelled Renaissance rinceaux and putti detailing on mouldings and cornices, as well as elaborated ironwork on the staircase balustrade.
