Description

No. 1 Tilney Street is a building that was originally constructed as three terraced houses around 1740 by Edward Shepherd. It has undergone early 19th century and late 19th century alterations to create a single town house. The exterior is faced with stucco over brick and features a slate roof. The building is mainly three storeys tall, with the left-hand bay now rising to four storeys and includes a basement. It has seven windows across the front, with one window returning to South Audley Street. The entrance is located in the ground floor of a full-height canted bay on the right side, featuring an architrave doorcase with a cornice supported by consoles. The windows are square-headed recessed sash windows without glazing bars. There is a parapet cornice and a blocking course at the top. An early 19th century geometric pattern cast iron balcony extends across the first floor and returns to South Audley Street, complemented by wrought iron area railings. Inside, the building retains a well-preserved original cut string staircase with carved brackets, turned balusters, and column newels. The first floor suite of rooms features late 19th century or around 1900 decoration in the fashionable Louis XV-Louis XVI style.
