Description

This is a late 18th-century terrace house with a shop. It is located on Charles Street, Westminster, and includes numbers 21 Waverton Street and 26 Hay's Mews. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick with an overhanging weatherboarded return to Waverton Street above the ground floor. It features a slate roof and a dormered mansard. The house has three bays to Charles Street. A mid-19th-century timber shop front, complete with an entablature, is present. A plain doorway is located to the left. The windows are revealed sashes, and those within the weatherboarded return are flush framed sashes. A cornice sits above the second floor, and there is a parapet with coping. The weatherboarding is a unique survival in Mayfair. According to local accounts, the house was built around 1750 by John Phillips, a carpenter who also worked for Lord Berkeley on the development of Charles Street.
