Description

No. 22 Charles Street is a terraced house built around 1753 by William Timbrell and John Phillips, with alterations made in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building features brown brick construction with a slate roof and a stuccoed rear. It has three storeys plus two attic storeys that were added in the early to mid-19th century, and it sits on a basement. The façade is three windows wide, with the entrance located to the right. This entrance includes a panelled door and a fanlight set within a stone doorcase that has a cornice supported by consoles. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes beneath flat gauged arches. There is a moulded stone cornice above the second floor and a parapet with coping. A cast iron balcony from around 1800 is present on the first floor, along with cast iron area railings. The rear of the house is stuccoed and features a canted bay on the ground and first floors.

Inside, the ground floor front room retains impressive mid-18th century panelling, moulded cornice doorcases, and an alcove with a cupboard flanking the chimneypiece. The first-floor rooms have cornices but display later neo-Georgian decoration. There is a stone staircase, likely from the early 19th century, with a plain iron balustrade. The roof structure includes an early iron frame. Notably, No. 22 was once the residence of the Duke of Clarence before he became William IV.
