Description

No. 8 Chesterfield Gardens is a large terrace house built in 1876 by J. T. Wimperis. It features a Portland ashlar façade and a slate roof, showcasing Beaux Arts and Renaissance detailing. The building is two windows wide, with the right side comprising four storeys topped by a steep dormered mansard, while the left side has three storeys, a single-storey north wing, and a basement.

To the left, there is a two-storey arched porch, and the ground floor is channelled. A canted bay window extends from the basement to the second floor on the right, featuring three sash lights, while the third floor has five arcaded windows. The left side has semicircular arched windows on the let and second floor. The building is adorned with moulded string and sill courses, a bracketed main cornice with a balustrade, and a segmental pedimented stone dormer over the right-hand third floor. The wing includes a canted bay window and a crowning balustrade. An ornate bracketed cast iron balcony is present on the first floor, along with decorative cast iron area railings.

Inside, the decoration likely dates from the early 20th century, featuring a heavy marble staircase with urn-shaped balusters. The right room on the ground floor has a modillion cornice and panelling that may be 18th century and imported. The ballroom at the rear boasts a deep covered frieze, a ceiling of lattice panels and rosettes, and walls divided by composite pilasters, adorned with Rococo-shaped panels featuring trophies and various ornamental plaster motifs. Additionally, there are two large carved marble chimney pieces.
