Description
This is a town mansion built in 1876 by J. T. Wimperis for Charles Magniac. The exterior is yellow stock brick with extensive stone dressings, covered by a slate roof. The architectural style is Beaux Arts and Renaissance, with four storeys and a basement, topped by a steeply pitched, dormered mansard roof. The building is six windows wide, with a two-window return to Curzon Street.
The entrance is positioned off-centre and features a broad, pilastered portico with columns in antis, above which is an arcaded three-light loggia. This is flanked by canted bay windows with sash lights and pilaster mullions. The ground floor is channelled, with windows framed by architraves, similar to the upper floors. All windows are flat arched, except those on the top floor, which have semicircular arches.
The return to Curzon Street has a two-storey portico on the right, and a canted bay with pilastered sash lights and a pediment above the second floor. A dentil cornice runs along the first floor, a plat band marks the third floor and a bracketed top cornice is topped with a balustraded parapet. Stone dormers are present. A continuous cast iron balcony is supported by stone brackets on the first floor. The property is enclosed by ornate cast iron area railings.
The interior includes a graceful, curved cantilevered stone staircase with a patterned cast iron balustrade. The decoration is largely from the early 20th century. On the first floor are two sumptuously decorated Rococo rooms, one of which is L-shaped and features ceiling panels decorated with mythological scenes. Two similar, but plainer, rooms are located on the ground floor. Marble, bolection-moulded doorframes are also present.
