Description

Stratton House Lodge, located to the north-west of Stratton House, is a stable and garden room that has been converted into a dwelling. It was built around 1868 and is likely designed by James Wilson. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate pavilion roof with a central belvedere.

The lodge has an octagonal plan and stands two storeys tall, with one window on each side except for the south side, which faces the garden. It has a stone eaves cornice and an eaves band that is bracketed at each angle and beside each window. The ground floor has a platband and a plinth. The windows are two-over-two pane sash windows without horns; those on the first floor are smaller, located at eaves level, and are flanked by plain pilasters below brackets.

The former carriage entrance facing the drive on the east side has a 20th-century tripartite two-over-two pane sash window. The west facade features a Venetian style recess with a ground floor platband that acts as an impost band, large radial voussoirs above a narrow central semicircular arch, and a projecting keystone that supports a block up to the eaves, which may have been intended for carving. There is a door on the north side. The octagonal belvedere has a similar eaves cornice and console keystones above semi-circular arched windows on each side, connected by an impost band. The interior has not been inspected, but the design was likely inspired by Monks Kitchen at Glastonbury Abbey.
