Description
The Gatehouse, also known as the Porter's Room, is a two-storey rectangular building dating from the 18th century. It features squared limestone walls and a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof with coped verges, along with a chimney located at the north-east. The building has blocked opposing 2-centred archways, each approximately 2 meters wide, on the south-east and north-west elevations. Flanking these archways are narrower doorways, each about 1 meter wide, with the doorway on the south-east elevation still in use.
On the ground floor of the south-east elevation, there is a ventilator slit to the left, a wide doorway to the right of centre, and a single door further to the right. The upper floor of the south-east elevation features a single-light oblong window with chamfered jambs and a central gabled dormer with a trefoiled light, which is aligned with the wall. A modern window has been inserted above the crown of the blocked archway. The north-east gable also has a similar oblong window on the upper floor.
An external flight of stone steps against the south-west gable leads to a doorway with a triangular stone head, which is sheltered by a gabled porch made of stone with a slate roof; projecting masonry bonds are present at the south-west end. The north-west elevation has two small square lights and a larger taking-in door inserted between them on the upper floor.
The interior was not accessible during the resurvey, but it is reported to have a modern wooden board and joist ceiling on the ground floor.
