Description
Mathern Vicarage is a 19th-century building constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble with near ashlar dressings and topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring red brick chimneys. The structure is a large square block with a hipped roof and projecting double gables at each end. It has two storeys and attics, designed in a very plain style with mullioned windows.
The entrance elevation consists of five bays. From the left, there is a 2-light mullioned window with a drip moulding above, followed by a blind window above it. Another similar window appears next, along with one in a half gable above. There is a tall stair window with a transom, featuring two panes in each light, and a small window on either floor to the left of this. The entrance has a plain door with a 3-light window above and a 2-light window in the gable above, along with a blind bay. The double gable elevations at either end have 3-light windows on the ground floor and 2-light windows above, with small extensions partially masking the east end.
The garden front is arranged in three bays with a central gable. From the left, there is a canted bay window with a transom, consisting of 1 + 3 + 1 lights, and a small 3-light window above. In the centre, a 5-light mullion-and-transom window is flanked by a larger 3-light window above, while to the right are two small 3-light windows. These small windows appear to provide light without a view into the garden, suggesting they serve as windows for servants' rooms, with the ground floor one likely being the kitchen. There is a single rooflight on both the front and rear of the building, and two tall ribbed brick stacks with a smaller one in the centre create an 'olde English' effect.
The interior was only partially visible during the resurvey. It features a centrally planned layout with original joinery and some fireplaces, although it is very plainly finished. The staircase is made of painted pine and has a dogleg design with turned balusters and stop-chamfered newel posts topped with ball finials.
