Description
The Old Barn at Mathern Palace is a barn constructed from roughly coursed local rubble and topped with a pantile roof. The entrance elevation features four bays across two storeys. Starting from the left, there is a plain doorway with a partly glazed door set beneath an oak lintel, with a 3-light oak framed mullioned leaded lattice casement window above it. Next is a 5-light window of the same style, with an oak cill and lintel, found on both floors but with slightly different glazing patterns. Following this is another plain doorway with a partly glazed door under a stone lintel, and a 3-light casement window on each floor, similar to the previous ones. These openings appear to have been added to the existing wall. The roof is plain, featuring an external stack on the right gable and a central stack in the second bay. The gable end has 2-light windows. The street elevation still shows the central cart doors, which are the only significant visual reminder of the building's agricultural past. Above and below these doors is a 5-light mullioned window, and there is a small lean-to extension on the right. The interior was not accessible during the last survey.
