Description
This is a Gothic drinking fountain made of grey and pink granite, built on a square plan. It features a two-step plinth with a base that has a chamfered top, followed by a step with a deep chamfer and a cornice moulding above. The fountain itself has a pink granite face with an arched recess over moulded half-bowl projections at the front and rear, framed by angle columns of grey granite that support a large spire-type finial. The left face of the fountain has an inscription that reads, "This fountain was erected by the inhabitants of Alltwen and district in memory of the late Howel Gwyn Esq JP DL Dyffryn Neath Sept 4th 1895," while the right face features the Welsh inscription, "Adailadwyd y ffynonell Hon can breswylwyr Alltwen a'r Gymmydocaeth er cof am y dwieddar Howel Gwyn Yswr JP DL Dyffryn Neath Sept 4th 1895." The base of the spire is surrounded by heavy plain gables on each face, and the spire itself is four-sided with a moulded pink granite string course. Above this, the spire becomes octagonal and features a bronze ring and socket at the top, which may have once held a finial. The fountain is enclosed by a square arrangement of spearhead iron railings with top and bottom rails and larger stanchions.
