Description

The gatepiers and gates to the Church of Saint Peter date from the 19th century and serve as the vehicular entry to the church. The gates are made of cast iron and are large, flanked by two substantial gatepiers constructed from rock-faced squared stone. These gatepiers feature plinths, projecting capstones, and large pyramidal tops, all of which are also rock-faced. At the top, they support an iron overthrow that retains remnants of scroll work.

On either side of the gates, there are lower short walls that connect to walls extending to the streetline, topped with rock-faced coping stones. The gates themselves are designed in a Gothic style, with the lower section consisting of six roundels, each enclosing a quatrefoil made up of four encircled trefoils. Above the mid-rail, there are six fleur-de-lys finials positioned between uprights of six Gothic cusped arches, which are topped with a moulded top rail adorned with seven additional fleur-de-lys finials.
