Description

The Neath Abbey Railway Viaduct is a railway structure that spans a road and river valley. It is built from squared coursed rubble stone with cut sandstone dressings. The first arch over the road features cut stone voussoirs forming an elliptical shape, supported by broad stone piers on either side. These piers have a two-step cut-stone cornice that projects forward beneath a high parapet, which includes a raised plinth and cut stone coping. The stonework beneath this arch is skewed. The second arch is broader and shallower, lacking any additional raised piers. Between the subsequent arches, the piers are divided axially by a narrow arch. The second pier, which remains at a high level, has only the arch head visible from beneath the second arch. The three much taller arches of the gorge showcase dramatically split piers, featuring tooled cut stone voussoirs and finely tooled stone on the piers, which is of much higher quality compared to the two end arches.
