Description

The Old Post Office Building, now serving as a Post Office Sorting Office, is designed in the Jacobethan style with simplified detailing facing Wind Street. It features a symmetrical three-storey structure with an attic and basement, constructed from ashlar stone that has been heavily cemented. The façade includes twin advanced gabled bays that flank a narrow entrance bay with a porch. The building is topped by a high slated roof, which has a two-stage openwork classical cupola and a weathervane. The gables are steep and partly shaped, with pedimented tops and ball-finials over attached granite columns at the attic windows. Additional architectural details include a moulded cornice and parapets, clasping pilaster treatments at the corners, faceted strips on the first and second floors, and moulded cill and cornice bands.

The windows are predominantly 1 and 2-light mullioned types, arranged in a pattern of 1-3-1-3-1, with a small oculus located on the ground floor to the left. The right side of the ground floor is enriched with arched windows, decorative swags, winged heads, and mythological figures in the spandrels. The porch features the Royal Arms set in an aedicule within a pediment, with a doorpiece that includes granite columns and a simplified capital and entablature, leading to double panelled doors. The building also has good area railings.

The massive side elevation facing the lane has an advanced gabled centre topped by a pilastered chimney, with detailing consistent with the front façade. The ground floor displays cartouches inscribed with "VR". To the left, there is a stair tower with ovoid upper lights. Additionally, a long three-storey and basement pilastered extension in yellow brick extends to the gable end facing the Strand.
