Description

The building at 19B Strathearn Road, Edinburgh, is a postal sorting office constructed in 1919 by the H M Office of Works. It features a symmetrical rectangular plan with five bays, built from squared and snecked sandstone, and includes polished ashlar dressings. The design incorporates a base course and an eaves band course.

On the northeast elevation, the central three bays are recessed, with an advanced doorpiece at the center that is architraved, keystoned, and corniced, topped with obelisk finials. It has replacement aluminium doors and a fanlight. Flanking the door are pilasters beside a single window on the first floor, which has corbels above the lintel. The second and fourth bays also have full-height pilasters flanking single windows with similar corbels above. The first-floor windows have aprons, while there are single windows on the outer left and right.

The east elevation features a corbelled chimney breast. The west elevation has a single-storey flat-roofed addition with five lights and another corbelled chimney breast. The rear (south) elevation includes a large pitched-roof sorting office.

The building has 18-pane sash and case windows, although the upper sash of the first-floor window in the second bay is blocked. The roof is covered with grey slate and features corniced gablehead stacks, coped gables, and scroll skewputts.

The interior was not seen in 1991. The property also includes two coped gatepiers at the pedestrian gateway, a low coped boundary wall with modern railings along the street, and high coped mutual boundary walls.
