Description
The building is a post office located at 11-15 Townfoot, constructed in 1896. It is a two-storey and attic, five-bay symmetrical tenement featuring mullioned and transomed tripartite windows, distinctive gableted dormers, and a post office on the ground floor. The exterior is made of squared and snecked bull-faced red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, and buff brick with red brick dressings and red sandstone lintels at the rear.
The building has a base course, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and a projecting drip course that includes a rainwater channel above. The margins are chamfered. The central entrance to the post office has a fanlight above it, with large, keystoned segmental-arched windows on either side. There are additional doors in the outer bays; the door to the left serves No 11 at the rear, while the door to the right provides access to the upper storeys.
At the first floor, there are a pair of tripartite windows, and above, two stepped ogee wallhead dormers break the eaves, each with a bi-partite window. The segmental-arched windows have plate glass, while sash and case windows are used elsewhere, featuring horns at the attic level. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a projecting rubble-built end stack to the west with red ashlar dressings. Clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
