Description
7 Galabank in Stow is a terrace of five single-storey, two-bay cottages from the early 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier materials. The terrace is flanked at each end by two-storey, three-bay houses with gable ends facing the road, creating a long U-shaped plan. The buildings are mainly constructed of whinstone rubble, painted white, with the southern elevation of No 10 featuring thinly-layered and roughly-coursed exposed whinstone and raised sandstone margins.
The cottages have a fairly regular arrangement of alternating doors and windows, with a central pend. The southern elevation of No 10 has regular fenestration and a later lean-to timber conservatory. There is a single window on the first floor of both the northern and southern gable ends. A stone forestair on the northern elevation leads to the first floor. The rear of the property has various later dormers and other additions.
Most windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, although some have non-traditional glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slate, featuring end stacks on the gabled dwellings and ridge stacks on the single-storey properties. The buildings primarily use short yellow clay cans for the chimneys and have cast iron rainwater goods.
