Description

The Old Post Office at 108 High Street in Kinross dates back to 1841. This two-storey, three-bay building features a Classical design with a corniced and pedimented entrance flanked by canted bays. At the northwest corner, there is a lower two-storey, single bay, crowstep-gabled former Post Office, likely built around the same time, which projects into the street and includes a Clock Tower in the re-entrant angle (listed separately). The structure is made of grey sandstone ashlar with snecked rubble, some squared, on the sides and rear, and has ashlar dressings, some droved. The Post Office is constructed from red sandstone with contrasting grey ashlar dressings. It has a banded base course and a moulded corniced eaves course, and features stone mullions in the tri-partite canted bays on the ground floor.

The principal elevation is symmetrical, with a panelled timber door at the center below an incised date panel, flanked by canted tri-partite windows on either side. The first floor has regular rectangular windows close to the eaves, with a blind window in the center.

On the rear elevation, the projecting Post Office bay has a single rectangular window on each floor within the crowstepped gable, which faces north and continues on the return to the south.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks and ashlar-coped skews. Decorative cast iron rainwater goods, including a rainwater hopper, are also present.

Inside, some areas retain plain cornices, timber dadoes, and panelled reveals. The dog-leg staircase features decorative cast iron balusters and a timber handrail.
