Description
144 Marchmont Road is a four-storey corner tenement building, constructed around 1880, designed in the Scottish 17th century style. The structure is made of squared and snecked sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings, a base course, a cornice above the shopfronts, raised window surrounds, and chamfered reveals.
On the Marchmont Road elevation, there is a black marble-faced bank front on the outer left, which includes a contrasting fluted corner column. Flanking the main door entrance are two little-altered shopfronts, with a pestle and mortar chemists trade sign to the left of the door and an altered shopfront to the outer right. Above the shopfronts, the building has six bays. A circular three-stage turret at the outer left embraces the corner, with three windows in each stage and a conical fishscale roof topped with a decorative cast-iron finial. The second, fourth, and fifth bays feature single windows, while the second bay has a pedimented dormerhead, the fourth bay has a crowstepped dormerhead, and the fifth bay is linked to a wallhead stack. There is a full-height canted window corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gable in the third bay, with a slit window set in the gablehead and a stone thistle finial. To the outer right, another full-height canted window has a facetted pyramidal roof and a decorative cast-iron finial.
The Thirlestane Lane elevation consists of two bays, with two windows at the ground level and a crowstepped gable above to the outer right. A doorway has been blocked to form a window in the second bay, with single windows above and in the remaining bay. The building features four-pane sash and case windows, with replacements noted at the first floor in the fourth, fifth, and sixth bays. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks, along with moulded octagonal cans and beak skewputts.
