Description
The National Bank Ltd is a Grade II listed building featuring a classical stucco front from the 19th century. The façade has two windows, end pilasters, and a dentil cornice above the second floor. There is an attic cornice and parapet with a central tablet, and the end pilasters support later 19th-century sash windows. The left panel of the main frieze is inscribed with "This is a joint pine end." The first and second floor windows have moulded architraves, with cornices featuring volute brackets above the first-floor sashes, which do not have glazing bars.
In around 1930, elaborate ashlar bank frontages were added in a Greek Revival style. This includes a lion mask cornice over the entablature, twin fluted columns in antis with acanthus capitals framing wide ground floor openings, and a recessed bay window with metal glazing and stall risers. The cill bands feature key patterns, while the pilasters are adorned with disc ornament and elongated key patterns. The entrance has a splayed corner with a disc architrave and bracket cornice, leading to double bronze doors.
Inside, the banking hall boasts a richly decorated ceiling with wreaths and guilloche bands, along with panelled counters and other features.
