Description

The National Westminster Bank is a dignified three-bay building that stands three storeys tall, designed in the late Regency classical style. It is constructed of stuccoed brick with a slate roof and end chimneys. The facade features a rusticated stucco ground floor, complete with a moulded cornice and arched bays that are slightly recessed between rusticated pilasters. The entrance is located in the left bay, with two windows to the right. Each window has an arched entablature, moulded imposts, and spandrel cut-outs. The entrance includes a panelled door topped by a three-pane Diocletian-type overlight, while the windows have similar three-part glazing.

The upper floors are symmetrical, showcasing scribed stucco and projecting quoins. The first floor features twelve-pane unhorned sash windows, while the second floor has smaller, square nine-pane windows. The window surrounds are moulded stucco, with the first-floor surrounds lugged and adorned with moulded cornice bands above each window, and the second-floor surrounds featuring a continuous sill-band and sill brackets. The building is topped with a parapet that has a moulded cornice and square plinths, each topped with ball finials.

In front of the bank, there are contemporary iron railings that complement the building, designed with panels featuring circles and diagonals in the Regency style. These railings sit atop a low limestone ashlar wall. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
