Description
12 St James Gardens is a terrace of 11 houses that rise along the road. The buildings are three storeys high and constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings, which are mostly painted. The roofs have mostly been replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and there are red brick chimneys. The original sash windows remain in most of the houses, although they have been replaced at Nos 17, 19, 21, and partially at No 22.
Each house features a tripartite window on the second floor to the left, set under a stone lintel, and a window to the right, also with a stone lintel. The sill course steps up with the buildings. On the second floor, to the left, there is a splayed bay window that is slightly recessed under a segmental brick arch with a keystone. To the right, there is a window with a stone cornice above which is a round brick arch with a keystone.
On the ground floor, to the left, there is a bathstone splayed bay that is set slightly forward of the bay above, featuring a balustrade and a pediment. There are two segmentally-headed windows at the front and a single segmentally-headed window on the splays. To the right, there is an entrance doorway flanked by pilasters with a segmental head and a balustrade above. The doorway has a panelled door with an overlight.
