Description
14 St James Gardens is a terrace of eleven houses, built in the late 18th century and stepped up along the road. The houses are constructed of red brick with decorative dressings of bathstone, much of which is now painted. The roofs have been largely replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and the chimneys are red brick. Most of the original sash windows remain, although they have been replaced at numbers 17, 19, 21 and partially at number 22.
The design of each house is similar. On the second floor, there is a tripartite window to the left-hand side beneath a stone lintel, and a single window to the right-hand side also beneath a stone lintel. A continuous sill course follows the rising levels of the terrace. To the left of the second floor is a splayed bay window, slightly recessed and set beneath a segmental brick arch with a keystone. To the right is a window with a stone cornice above which there is a round brick arch with a keystone. The left-hand ground floor features a splayed bay window, which is set slightly forward of the bay above, and includes a balustrade and a pediment. This bay has two segmentally-headed windows facing forward and a single window within the splayed sides. The right-hand ground floor has an entrance doorway flanked by pilasters and a segmental head above, ornamented with a balustrade. It has a panelled door with a matching overlight.
