Description
17 St James Gardens is a terrace of eleven houses, built in the 18th century and designed to step up along the road. The houses are of red brick construction with decorative bathstone dressings, although much of the stone is now painted. The roofs have largely been replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and there are red brick chimneys. Most of the original sash windows remain, but they have been replaced or partially replaced at numbers 17, 19, 21, and 22.
The facades of the houses exhibit variations in design. On the second floor, each house features a tripartite window to the left, set beneath a stone lintel, and a single window to the right, also with a stone lintel. A sill course rises with the elevation of the terrace. The left side of the second floor has a splayed bay window set slightly back under a segmental brick arch with a keystone. The right side has a window with a decorative stone cornice above a round brick arch and a keystone. On the ground floor, the left-hand house has a projecting, splayed bay with a balustrade and pediment, featuring two segmentally-headed windows facing the front and a single window to the sides. The right-hand house has a recessed entrance doorway flanked by pilasters and a segmental head with a balustrade above. A panelled door with an overlight completes the entrance.
