Description
16 St James Gardens is a terrace of 11 houses that rise along the road. The buildings are three storeys high, constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings, which are mainly painted. The roofs have mostly been replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and there are red brick chimneys. The original sash windows remain in most houses, although they have been replaced at Nos 17, 19, 21, and partially at No 22.
On the second floor of each house, to the left, there is a tripartite window set under a stone lintel, and to the right, a window also with a stone lintel. The sill course steps up with the buildings. To the left on the second floor, there is a splayed bay window that is slightly recessed and sits under a segmental brick arch with a keystone. To the right, there is a window with a stone cornice above, topped by a round brick arch with a keystone.
On the ground floor, to the left, there is a bathstone splayed bay that is set slightly forward of the bay above, featuring a balustrade and a pediment. This is accompanied by two segmentally-headed windows at the front and a single segmentally-headed window on the splays. To the right, there is an entrance doorway flanked by pilasters, with a segmental head above and a balustrade over it, leading to a panelled door with an overlight.
