Description
18 St James Gardens is a terrace of 11 houses that ascend along the road. The buildings are three storeys high, constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings, which are mostly painted. The roofs have been mainly replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and there are red brick chimneys. Most of the houses retain their original sash glazing, though the windows have been replaced at Nos 17, 19, 21, and partially at No 22.
Each house features a tripartite window on the second floor to the left, set under a stone lintel, and a window to the right, also with a stone lintel. The sill course rises with the buildings. To the left on the second floor, there is a splayed bay window that is slightly recessed and sits under a segmental brick arch with a keystone. To the right, there is a window with a stone cornice, above which is a round brick arch with a keystone.
On the ground floor, to the left, there is a bathstone splayed bay that is set slightly forward of the bay above, featuring a balustrade and a pediment, along with two segmentally-headed windows at the front and a single segmentally-headed window on the splays. To the right, there is an entrance doorway flanked by pilasters, with a segmental head and a balustrade above, leading to a panelled door with an overlight.
