Description

21 St James Gardens is a terrace of 11 houses that ascend along the road. The buildings are three storeys high, constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings, which are mostly painted. The roofs have largely been replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and there are red brick chimneys. Most of the houses retain their original sash glazing, although the windows at Nos 17, 19, and 21 have been replaced, and some at No 22 have been partially altered.

Each house features a tripartite window on the second floor to the left, set under a stone lintel, and a window to the right, also with a stone lintel. The sill course of the windows steps up with the buildings. On the second floor, to the left, there is a splayed bay window that is slightly recessed and sits under a segmental brick arch with a keystone. To the right, there is a window with a stone cornice above, topped with a round brick arch that also has a keystone.

On the ground floor, to the left, there is a bathstone splayed bay that is set slightly forward of the bay above, featuring a balustrade and a pediment. This is accompanied by two segmentally-headed windows at the front and a single segmentally-headed window on the splays. To the right, there is an entrance doorway flanked by pilasters, with a segmental head and a balustrade above. The door is panelled and has an overlight.
