Description

15 St James Gardens is a terrace of eleven houses, built to step up along the road. These houses date from the 18th century and are constructed of red brick with decorative dressings of bathstone, most of which is now painted. The roofs have largely been replaced with tiles or slate substitutes, and the chimneys are red brick. The windows are mainly original sash windows, although replacements are present at numbers 17, 19, 21 and partially at number 22.

Each house features distinctive detailing. On the second floor, a tripartite window sits to the left, topped with a stone lintel, while a single window with a stone lintel is on the right. A continuous sill course rises with the buildings. The second floor also has a splayed bay window recessed under a segmental brick arch with a keystone on the left, and a window with a stone cornice, surmounted by a round brick arch with a keystone on the right. The ground floor on the left has a projecting splayed bay with a balustrade and a pediment, featuring two segmentally-headed windows to the front and a single segmentally-headed window in the splayed sides. To the right of the bay stands the entrance doorway, flanked by pilasters with a segmental head above, topped with a balustrade. The doorway itself has a panelled door with an overlight.
