Description
9 St James Crescent is a terrace of four houses that have been converted into offices, located on the convex curve of St James Crescent. The arrangement features a central house with five windows, flanked by two three-window houses on the left and one three-window house on the right. The exterior is finished in stucco, with band strips at the sill levels of the first and second floors. The second-floor windows are set in shallow moulded surrounds with keystones, while the first-floor windows are topped with stucco bracketed segmental pediments over segmental headed windows. Most of the terrace has horned sash glazing, although some inappropriate modern materials have been used for replacements, particularly in No 10. The roofs are slate, and there are large red brick chimneys.
No 8, the leftmost house with three windows, features two dormers, with the left bay of two windows set slightly forward. It has Doric pilasters at the ends, with the left pilaster clad in artificial slate, which also covers the gable end of the terrace. The paired windows on the second and first floors are complemented by a splayed bay window on the ground floor to the left, and the entrance doorway, which has an overlight, is situated under an open porch supported by pillars.
No 9, while lacking the advanced bay of No 8, is a mirror image of it but has a rebuilt ground floor bay. No 10, which has five windows, also features Doric pilasters at the ends and three dormers. Its ground floor includes a central doorway with a stucco architrave and a panelled door, with glazing throughout. No 11, the rightmost house with three windows, has two windows on the right that are slightly offset. Its ground floor features an entrance doorway with an overlight under an open porch with pillars to the right, and a splayed bay window with brackets at the angles to the left, although it has modern plastic glazing.
