Description

8 St James Crescent is a terrace of four houses, now offices, dating from the 18th century, situated on a convex curve. The composition is of a central five-window house flanked by two three-window houses to the left and one three-window house to the right. The houses are stuccoed with band strips marking the sill levels of the first and second floors. Second-floor windows are framed by shallow moulded surrounds with keystones, while first-floor windows have stucco bracketed segmental pediments above segmental-headed sashes. Most windows retain their horns and original sash glazing, although some have been replaced with modern materials, particularly at number 10. The roofs are slate-covered, with large red brick chimneys.

Number 8, the left house, has two dormers. Its left bay is set slightly forward and features Doric pilasters at the ends; the left pilaster and gable end are clad in artificial slate. Paired windows are present on the second and first floors. On the ground floor, a splayed bay window is on the left side. The entrance doorway has an overlight and is sheltered by an open porch supported by pillars. Number 9 is a mirror image of number 8, but with its ground floor bay rebuilt. Number 10, the central house, also has Doric pilasters to the ends and three dormers. It features a central ground floor doorway with a stucco architrave and a panelled door. Number 11, the right house, has three dormers and its right bay is set slightly forward. A ground floor entrance doorway is under an open porch with pillars, and a splayed bay window with brackets to the angles is on the left side, featuring modern plastic glazing.
