Description

The Former Flour and Grist Mill at The Mill is a two-storey structure built of rubble stone, topped with a restored stone tile roof. The front features a wide boarded door on the lower right, which is large enough for the conveyance of sacks, and to its left is a narrower opening secured with iron bars. Above the doorway, there is a boarded opening used for hoisting grain into the building, and a small two-light window is positioned to the left of this. The waterwheel was located against the left gable end; although the wheelpit is mostly infilled now, there remains an opening at low level for the axle-tree, and a boarded gable opening is situated at the height of the sluice box. An added lean-to stable is attached to the right gable end, which includes an inserted doorway on the right. The rear of the mill is built into the bank and features a doorway on the upper right beneath a gablet, providing access from the house. There is also an added garage at a lower level behind to the left.

The roof has three bays with trusses that include collar beams. The right gable end contains an infilled ground-floor fireplace, likely from a former drying floor. The lower storey retains part of the axle-tree, along with the pit wheel and wallower, while the crown wheel is still present on the upper floor.
