Description

Draen, including the attached former byre, is a building situated on a steeply sloping site, with the byre located at the uphill end and the house at the downhill end. The house is one-and-a-half storeys tall and features a stable in the basement. Its walls are made of battered rubble sandstone, topped with a slate roof, while the byre has a corrugated metal roof. A stone stack is positioned to the left of the house.

At the front (north) of the house, there is a lean-to porch on the left side, covered by a stone tile roof, which has renewed diamond mullions in a small front window. To the right, the house includes a casement window in an earlier opening and an inserted window located below the eaves. Below to the right is a stable door with a drip stone leading to the former stable in the basement. The right gable end features a two-light attic casement inserted into an earlier opening, also with a drip stone. At the rear, there is a pentice on the left and an outshut on the right that houses the stair. Beneath the pentice, a three-light window with diamond mullions is located on the left, lighting the former parlour, along with an inserted doorway in the center and a sash window on the right that has been enlarged from an original opening. The outshut has a stone tile roof and includes a diamond-mullion stair light.

The byre has a boarded door on the north side to the left, which is situated under a drip stone, and a former doorway to the right that has been converted into a window with inserted diamond mullions. A small ty bach is located against the gable end. The rear of the byre features a blocked doorway on the right and an opening on the left.

Although not inspected during the survey in November 1997, it was recorded by Jones and Smith that the building retains a fireplace stair and part of the original partition that screened off the dairy, which still has a salting slab.
