Description
The Keep at Brecon Barracks is a medieval-style building constructed from brown stone, featuring contrasting dressings. It has a central four-storey keep flanked by two taller staircase towers on the north elevation, which faces the Parade Ground. The east wing is three storeys high, while the west wing is two storeys. Both wings have slate roofs and stone bands. The keep is topped with a crenellated parapet that includes machicolations, and it has ashlar bands at the levels of the window heads and sills, as well as quoins and window dressings made from contrasting stone.
The north elevation facing the Parade Ground consists of six bays, while the street elevation has eight bays. The street side features a cantilevered bay window supported by corbelling. The towers on the northeast elevation have battered bases and are topped with crenellated parapets that also include machicolations. Each tower has stair windows, with three windows rising in steps on each floor. Many of the window openings, which were originally fitted with sash windows and louvres, are now blocked.
