Description
The American Villa is a Grade II listed 'balloon-frame' timber house, differing slightly in design from No. 39. It has two storeys and an attic, with a gable facing the street and three bay return elevations. The north side features a central advanced full-height gable, which corresponds to a flush gable on the south side. A veranda in the north-east corner forms a porch at the street front, providing access to the main doorway. The house has clap-boarded walls, slate roofs with tile ridges, and brick chimneys, with gutters made from wooden troughs above the roof boarding. The veranda is supported by turned timber posts and curved brackets, and the house features timber bargeboards. In some areas, it is supported on dwarf brick piers. The windows are sash style, with two pairs, single windows at the sides, and pairs in the gables, all without glazing bars. The doors are semi-glazed with margin panes. The overall design is quite plain, with only slight decorative notching visible on the underside of the cladding boards within the gables.
