Description
The Red Lion Inn is a two-storey public house dating from the 19th century, featuring six windows that face directly onto the road, following a slight curve. The building is constructed of creamwashed rubble masonry, with the north-east corner slightly rounded. It has a slate roof with a tile ridge and slightly sprocketted eaves. Ornamental brackets are positioned above the windows. There are four pairs of rebuilt brick stacks set diagonally on rendered square bases. The sides and rear are plain-rendered and cream-colored.
The rear elevation includes a centrally located staircase projection, and to the east, there is a later parallel range with two windows and fire-escape stairs. To the west, there are irregular recent catslide extensions, along with a single-storey extension at the west end. The 19th-century sash windows have four panes in exposed frames, set in cambered-head openings with brick arches and stone sills. One of the lower windows has been walled up.
The central doorway features a cambered head and is framed by a flat-topped porch in a simplified classical style, supported by thin timber columns, with an architrave and a plain cornice above the brackets. The porch has two round columns on low stone bases. The doorway itself is outlined in plain render and contains a six-panel door, with the bottom panels flush, and a rectangular overlight. A small metal plate on the transom reads 'Air raid warden'.
The layout of the original single-depth inn or farmhouse is still evident, with the stairs wing projecting opposite the entrance, although the bar interiors have been altered.
