Description
Nos 2, 2a, and 4, known as Caerffair, are two-storey and attic houses dating from the 19th century, featuring a five-window range. The original house had three windows but has been modified to include four two-window arrangements. The ground floor is rusticated up to the first-floor sill-course, while the first floor is rendered, topped with a dentilled cornice and a plain coped parapet. Nos 2 and 2a have three dormers, and No 4 has two. The windows are hornless 12-pane sashes set in moulded architraves, with the upper windows having bases that step out, while the lower ones are more elaborate, featuring panelled piers, panelled heads, and cornices on console brackets.
Nos 2 and 2a share a pair of doors, with the door to 2a being a later addition, as the other is centrally aligned. Both doors have overlights and earlier 20th-century doors. A wide classical porch with two fluted Ionic columns, pilaster responds, and an entablature with a modillion cornice enhances the entrance. No 4 has one ground floor window to the left and a six-panel door to the right, set in a tall doorcase with panelled piers and an open segmental pediment.
No 4 has been restored to align more closely with Nos 2 and 2a. The 1963 listing noted the presence of plate glass windows and indicated that there was no ground floor rustication, except for the surviving angle quoins on the first floor.
The houses are situated on a raised rubble stone terrace with a curved southwest angle, complemented by fine mid-19th-century cast-iron railings featuring a pattern of circles and diagonal spears. The railings curve around the south end wall and are accompanied by two sets of iron gatepiers and matching gates.
