Description
This is a house dating from around 1850 to 1860, constructed in stucco with a painted stone plinth and a painted timber eaves cornice that matches the adjacent property at No. 15. The roof is now covered with concrete tiles, replacing original slates, and the chimneys have been removed. The two-storey, two-window elevation facing Goring Road initially featured 16-pane sash windows with stone sills, though these have since been replaced with plastic frames.
The entrance front, located at the west end, is typical of the mid-19th century. It is roughcast with two upper floors, an attic window with a cambered head, two flat-headed first-floor windows, and a central blank arched panel. A large, gabled timber porch sits centrally, flanked by a bow window on each side. The porch has a pedimented gable supported by heavy carved brackets, and a ‘Florentine’ traceried west window consisting of two arched lights with a roundel above. A door with an overlight is situated on the south side. Some original glazing remains from the upper windows. Original cast-iron flower balconies survive. A ground-floor bow window on the left is from the early 20th century, while the one on the right has been replaced with plastic.
The west end garden is enclosed by intersecting oval cast-iron railings set upon low coped walls; the walls are stone facing Goring Road and brick on the side. A matching gate completes the enclosure.
