Description

4, 5, and 6 Upper Church Street are houses in an irregular terrace built around 1780, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century, likely by John Wood the Younger. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature Welsh slate roofs, although Nos. 4 and 5 are largely hidden from the street. The houses have double depth plans with an entry to the right and staircases at the rear.

The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement. Nos. 4 and 5 have a full-height attic storey, which is probably a mid-19th century alteration. Each house has a three-window front with restored sash windows, except for some specific details mentioned. They also feature six-panel doors, where the bottom two panels are flush and the top two are glazed, all set within a pedimented Tuscan doorcase. A platband is present at the first-floor level, and there is a modillion cornice above the second floor. Plain wrought iron railings are on buns leading to the areas, with a return to the front door over an area bridge.

No. 4 has plain plate glass sashes on the ground and first floors, with first-floor windows having dropped sills and cast iron window guards. There are two attic windows in the position of previous dormers, along with a secondary cornice and parapet. No. 5 features first-floor windows with dropped sills, six/six sashes, and small iron balconettes. No. 6 has a continuous tented balcony on the first floor, a Regency period alteration, with three French window doors: a two-pane fixed head over four-pane doors with a wooden panel beneath. There is a lead downpipe to the left. The mansard roof includes two dormers, with a casement window to the left and a six/six sash window to the right. The rear elevations have not been inspected.
