Description

This shop, dating to circa 1773, is part of a development designed by John Wood the Younger and was altered in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate mansard roof featuring two dormers, hipped to the right. The building is two storeys high and has a two-window front. It has a coved eaves cornice and sash windows with two panes to each, those on the first floor having flaps to secure the upper sashes. The right-hand entrance has a swept pediment and moulded, shallow-pointed architrave above a four-panel door. This door has chamfered arrises, trefoil heads to the upper panels, diagonal boarding to the lower panels, and a leaded overlight. To the left is a small, projecting shop window with cornice to the fascia above a central half-glazed door and overlight. This building represents one of the entrances to Margaret Chapel, also designed by John Wood the Younger and built in circa 1773, which was destroyed in 1942. The interior has not been inspected.
