Description

The buildings at 1 and 2 Margaret's Buildings are two terrace houses, now used as a shop and restaurant. They were constructed between 1770 and 1780, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The buildings were part of an area planned and built by John Wood the Younger. Constructed from limestone ashlar, they feature roofs which are not visible. The houses are double-depth, with each having one window facing the front, and extending over four storeys, including an attic. A continuous high coped parapet and a cornice run along the second floor. Each attic window is a four/four-pane sash window. The second and first floors are punctuated by one plate glass, flat-arched Venetian window per house. Number 1, on the right, has a mid-19th century shop front. It features an elaborate dentil cornice with paired turned pendants. This cornice steps out over a projecting shop window, comprised of two plate glass panes, flanked by panelled pilasters with fluted scrolled consoles and foliate blocks at the tops. A half-glazed shop door and overlight are situated to the left. A projecting cornice forms a porch over a recessed four-panel door and overlight to the right. Number 2, formerly a public house, has a mid-19th century front, articulated by five painted stone Tuscan pilasters with 20th-century infills. A six-panel door is set back to the right. The interiors were not inspected.
