Description
The Ice House of Middleton Hall is a structure featuring two low stonework wing walls that slightly converge towards a brickwork tunnel entrance. The ice house has been excavated into a pre-existing bank, so there is no noticeable mound above it.
Inside, there is a brickwork-lined and domed chamber that measures about 3 meters in diameter and extends 3 meters below the entrance level. The dome's peak consists of a stone approximately 0.5 meters in diameter. At the bottom of the chamber, there is a sump and soakaway designed to drain melt-water away from the ice. The entrance passage on the right side of the chamber is about 3 meters long and constructed from brickwork. It originally had three doors, but only slots for the frames remain. A modern security grille is present at the inner access position.
